A brief and basic introduction to the season of Advent from our bulletin:

Advent is a time of preparation for the great feast of Christmas. It is the beginning of the Christian year, making the First Sunday in Advent the Church’s New Year’s Day. This Sunday, also known as Advent Sunday, is always the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th). There are always four Sundays in the season, but in some years Christmas Eve will occur in the evening of the Fourth Sunday. Advent is derived from the Latin adventus, which refers to the coming of Christ. Historically, the Church throughout the ages has reflected on three different comings of Christ during this time: we wait with joy for the child Jesus to be born at the stable in Bethlehem; we make room daily for Him to come into our hearts; and with penitence we prepare for Him to come again at the last day to judge the world with justice and truth. The season has notes of both joy and repentance. It is a season full of expectation. Fasting and abstinence are expected at this time of year. It is not Christmas yet, and in the hustle and bustle of the world’s preparation for Christmas, which seems to come earlier each year, Advent is an excellent time for some counter-cultural simplicity and silence.

We are very excited to be celebrating this Advent at our new worship space, 20 Front Street in Lake Orion.
